School history

The school was opened in 1953 as the Robert Pattinson School. Sir Robert Pattinson was the Chairman of Kesteven County Council for 20 years, and for 50 years a County Councillor. He was Liberal MP for Grantham 1922-23. He was knighted in 1934, the year he became leader of Kesteven County Council. His sister married Sir Richard Winfrey, another Lincolnshire Liberal MP, and their son Mill Hill School educated Richard Pattinson Winfrey (Pat Winfrey) founded the East Midland Allied Press in 1947, today known as the magazine publisher EMAP, a former FTSE 100 company. In the year of the school's foundation, 1953, it first entered the magazine market with Angling Times. Sir Robert Pattinson died a year later on 2 December 1954, aged 82.

It was a 'bilateral' school (part grammar/part secondary modern) until January 1961 when the grammar school students transferred to the newly opened North Kesteven Grammar School.

Comprehensive

It became a comprehensive when parts of northern Kesteven became comprehensive in September 1970. This was four years before Lincoln went comprehensive; Lincoln was a separate county borough until April 1974, and had been historically Labour-controlled.

It became a grant-maintained school in 1992, transferring to Foundation status in 1999.

Academy

On 1 August 2011 the school became an Academy and changed its name to Sir Robert Pattinson Academy.[1][2]

Facilities

The Band Det (F) detachment of the Army Cadet Force is sited on the school, which meets on Tuesdays.[3] It was built by the Nottingham-based East Midlands Reserve Forces, and is also used by 1237 (North Hykeham) ATC.[4] It was built in October 2010 by Trent Valley Construction of North Hykeham. The Regimental Band of the Lincolnshire Army Cadet Force use the building.

Traditions

The school has four houses, Windsor, Stuart, Tudor and York (named after historic families within the British Royalty), who compete in sporting events throughout the year to attempt to win the Governors Cup. This is presented at Sports Day each year, which is traditionally held in the first week of July. Windsor House have traditionally been the dominant sporting force but were knocked off their perch by York and Stuart in 2011, who finished 1st and 2nd respectively. Despite this, Windsor still claimed the Governors' Cup.

Timeline of the school

Academic performance
